Like copperplate engraving, the illustration was cut into the wood with a burin. Varying widths and depths in the cut were used to convey different shades and textures. Prints made using the wood engraving technique were used to illustrate newspapers for distribution on a mass scale. In the United States Harper's Weekly?and “Frank Leslie's Newspaper?became the leading illustrated publications, in Great Britain “Illustrated London News?and “The Graphic? in Germany “UWeber Land und Meer? “Illustrirte Zeitung? “Gartenlaube?and others, in France “Monde illustre?and “Illustration?
